Coop remains on a growth trajectory

19.02.2019, Coop achieved strong sales growth in 2018. Sales increased by CHF 1.5 billion to CHF 30.7 billion, which equates to growth of 5.0%. EBITDA rose by 5.5% to reach CHF 2.1 billion. Profit came to CHF 473 million, placing it almost on a par with the previous year (-2.6%).


Both the Retail and the Wholesale / Production business areas contributed to the growth. Retail grew by 1.9% to CHF 17.7 billion, while the Wholesale / Production business area posted growth of 9.0% to CHF 14.2 billion.

The online segment enjoyed strong growth: sales were up 20.6% to more than CHF 2.3 billion.

In terms of sustainability, Coop remains the undisputed market leader, with growth of 9.7% to CHF 4.7 billion. A total of CHF 1.7 billion was achieved from organic products alone, which equates to a growth of 19.1%.

The Coop Group generated total sales of CHF 30.7 billion. EBITDA increased by 5.5% to CHF 2.1 billion. Profit came to CHF 473 million, placing it almost on a par with the previous year (-2.6%).

Equity including minority interests reached 47.9% of total assets. Operating cash flow amounts to CHF 1.7 billion, corresponding to an increase of 17.1%. The Coop Group thus continues to enjoy a very solid financial foundation and is well positioned for the future.

At the end of 2018, Coop employed 89 579 people (+3 155), including 56 331 (+850) in Switzerland.

Coop achieved further very strong growth in its sustainable ranges. Sustainability sales totalled CHF 4.7 billion (+9.7%). Sales of organic products increased by 19.1% to CHF 1.7 billion. Coop thus remains the undisputed organic leader in Switzerland.

The online business is also growing fast. Net sales amounted to CHF 2.3 billion. This is almost CHF 400 million more than in the previous year, corresponding to growth of 20.6%. In the Wholesale / Production business area, net sales grew by 23.4% and in Retail by 15.4%. Home electronics made a substantial contribution to this, with growth of 17.3% to CHF 512 million. Coop@home recorded growth of 6.7%, gaining market shares.

Retail In Retail, Coop grew by 1.9% and achieved net sales of CHF 17.7 billion.

Customer footfall at Coop supermarkets was up 3.1%. At CHF 10.4 billion, net sales were 0.8% higher than the previous year.

The specialist formats advanced net sales by 3.6% to CHF 7.3 billion. In the home electronics segment, they consolidated their leading position with sales in excess of CHF 2.0 billion and growth of 1.5%. As a result of its realignment, Livique / Lumimart gained market shares and grew by 2.7%. The health area developed well, with growth of 8.4% at Coop Vitality and 24.7% at Update Fitness.

At the end of 2018, Coop was operating 2 313 sales outlets in Retail, which means it still boasts the densest network of sales outlets in Switzerland.

Wholesale / Production In the Wholesale / Production Business Area, Coop achieved net sales of CHF 14.2 billion, an increase of 9.0%. Adjusted for acquisitions, the Wholesale / Production Business Area grew by 4.5%.

The Transgourmet Group generated net sales of CHF 9.7 billion. Transgourmet thus grew by 6.9% and further consolidated its position as Europe's second-largest wholesale supplies and cash & carry company.

Net sales of the manufacturing companies grew by 13.2%, totalling CHF 4.9 billion.
